Deliveroo driver sexually assaults pregnant woman in terrifying attack. Victim has miscarriage, he gets only 12 months
Yet another case where the sentence simply isn't enough
I’ve warned people here not to use food delivery companies because the drivers are often illegals and sadly this story bears this out.
“Scots army veteran JJ, who has chosen to remain anonymous, ordered groceries to be delivered to her home in the east end of Glasgow at around 7pm on January 4 last year.
The 32-year-old, who was pregnant at the time, was met at her front door by delivery driver Muhammad Faizan Khan. He complimented her eyes, which she brushed off before attempting to take the food from him.
Without warning, he then forcibly put his tongue in her mouth and pushed her into her home before subjecting her to the sickening assault, which left her bleeding, and which she believes contributed to a miscarriage a few days later.”
All things being equal that sounds very likely doesn’t it?
“JJ said she managed to close the door on him and lock it before calling the police, but he stayed for around 10 minutes more trying to get back in, only leaving when he heard sirens.”
Goodness only knows what would have happened had he got back in.
“He was found guilty in December 2024 at Glasgow Sheriff Court, where he was handed a 12-month prison sentence and placed on the sex offenders register in February this year.”
Firstly sexually assaulting a woman in her own home should result in far more than that. His trying to get back in must have been terrifying for her.
She said: "He will haunt me for the rest of my life. I feel like I can't even smile at people anymore without men thinking that I'm coming on to them.
"I was quite an outgoing person, but I'm scared to smile or say thank you in case that makes another man think it's okay to attack me."
That sounds a resonable and perfectly normal reaction and something he should pay for. 12 months (which may be 6 months served) is nowhere near enough for this attack.
“She has since been informed Khan had rented the Deliveroo account from another person. Police officers told her this made for a "grey area" of the law which means anybody can turn up at doors with very few checks done.”
This is totally unacceptable. We cannot have people delivering to houses where the vulnerable are with no checks on them. But it gets worse.
“She added: "I was lucky it was a Morrisons order [via Deliveroo] and the store cameras recorded him picking it up. Without them, there would have been no chance of finding him.”
"The guy who did it to me will be out in 12 months and anyone like him can rent an account with no checks. He could turn up at any woman's door in Glasgow and do the same."
Not only are there no checks at the company level, there are NO CHECKS at the sub contractor level. Anyone can do the job, including convicted thieves, sex offenders and paedophiles. In fact she could answer the door in a year’s time and he could be there again!
“Delivery firms were previously warned in 2022 after a whistleblower told how a 'convicted child groomer' and 'one man with a rape conviction' were working using rented accounts in Glasgow.
The Record revealed at the time that crime gangs were among those renting accounts, which get around requirements for drivers to be subject to criminal record and right-to-work checks.”
As usual our MPs due nothing while we have people working illegally in plain sight.
“Deliveroo, JustEat and Uber Eats all said that delivery drivers are independent contractors and reserve the right to allow other people to use their account.”
NOT good enough.
“However, in response to JJ's experience, a Deliveroo spokesperson commented: “This was a horrendous and shocking incident and our thoughts are with the victim. The safety of our customers is our top priority and we have a zero-tolerance policy towards harassment or assault.”
Yeah of course you do, that’s why you allow zero checks on YOUR delivery drivers working via a third party. They are YOUR drivers, they are delivering for you, you get paid for the work they do. You have a duty of care to ensure they are safe to deal with the public in their homes.
“An Uber Eats spokesperson added: “All couriers who use the Uber Eats app, whether it is the account holder or their substitute, must undergo checks to ensure they are over 18 and have a legal right to work in the UK.””
And how do you ensure the person delivering is the person who passed the checks? You can’t can you because you’ve no idea who is actually doing the delivering.
JustEat were contacted by the paper and didn’t even bother to reply.
You can do something about this : STOP using these companies. They are employing illegal workers and you risk this sort of attack, or worse, every single time you use them. Only use companies that use their own drivers, it could save you from a horrific and live changing attack.
Meanwhile this woman got 12 months in jail for multiple “dine and dash” crimes in the Swansea area last year. I think that’s more appropriate, don’t you?
I feel similarly, a less traumatic experience but I was chatting to a black British guy next to me on a flight in October, we had a lovely chat for about 15 mins, he gave me some of his snacks. Then I looked the other way and something landed in my bra. I was wearing a normal vest top, no cleavage or anything showing. It was some rubbish from the snacks. I looked around like an idiot and asked him what had happened. Behind me was a Spanish family and it obviously wasn't them. I asked him how rubbish got in my bra and he said "I don't know who it was, someone obviously fancies you". Now I wonder about being friendly to strange men, recently in the pub I was having another nice chat but I kept backing off a bit in case the guy groped me.
Lucy Connolly gets 31 months in Jail for hurty words, but the actual loss of life, i.e. the death of the unborn gets 12 months. It doesn't make any sense at all.
